Briarcliff-North Druid Hills Rd Development Project

The newspapers have been reporting on the proposed large new retail and housing development project at the intersection of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills Roads. There has been a series of public meetings seeking community input to define some guidelines for future development in this area, and advice on how to improve the 'public realm' with improved and accessible green spaces, improved street layouts and streetscapes, pedestrian and bike paths, and zoning guidelines for building heights.

The largest piece will be an Atlantic Station style of development by the Sembler Company. Other parts include a major renovation by the owners of Executive Park, a new hotel to take over the old Bell South training facility, and more. These public meetings have been coordinated by local civic associations, the stakeholders, and Commissioners Kathie Gannon and Jeff Rader.

Dr. Alex Garvin has been hired as a consultant to help bring it all together (he was also involved in planning for the Atlanta Beltline project). Dr. Garvin has generated a series of power point presentations. The first one looks at 'guiding principles', and subsequent presentations analyze the many issues involved in this project. His presentations are available on this website: www.briarcliffnorthdruidhills.org. The most recent presentation was made on July 25th, and was the first draft that integrates the recommendations coming from the public planning process with the development plans for Sembler and the other property owners. This draft will be posted in a few days. The final version of this report will be made at the last public meeting in late August or early September. If you are interested in what is happening here, please visit their website.
